Delegate Transport Information

We are proud to be hosting the conference in the exciting city of Durban, South Africa. In the case with every city that hosts the International AIDS Conference, it requires tailored planning to ensure a smooth experience in the context of the given location.

This year, the conference organizers have worked closely with the city to develop a transport system that provides a convenient, safe passage for all delegates. The built-in registration cost for transport includes buses to and from the Durban International Convention Centre that will be available from designated pick-up points at or close to the official conference hotels, or from alternative designated pick-up points (this service excludes airport transfers). The nine-day service is provided from Friday 15 July – Saturday 23 July. Buses will run at set times, in line with registration, pre-conferences and the conference programme. 

There will be two types of transport – airport shuttles and conference shuttles.

Incoming Airport Shuttles

AIDS 2016 Information Desks are stationed in both the Domestic Arrivals (near baggage claim) and International Arrivals (as you exit the terminal) at King Shaka International Airport. Volunteers and staff are available throughout the day to answer your questions.

Arrival shuttles from King Shaka International Airport

Days: From Friday 15 July to Monday 18 July
Times: 7:00 to 22:00 at regular intervals in line with demand (minimum once an hour)
Cost:    80 ZAR one-way (cash only). Advance booking is not available.
Purchase:    AIDS 2016 Information Desk at the exit to the International Arrivals terminal.

A full list of areas and hotels is included on the following page. Please check this list to ensure your shuttle is headed to the right location.

Group 1 shuttles will proceed to hotels in those areas. Starting Saturday 16 July, delegates can take a shuttle from their hotel to the ICC to complete their registration and accreditation. Delegates who wish to proceed directly to the ICC to finalize their registration should take any Group 2 shuttle.

Group 2 shuttles will proceed to the Durban ICC to allow these delegates to finalize their registration and accreditation. Group 2 shuttles will then follow a designated schedule to take delegates from the ICC to their hotels. Light refreshments are available at the Durban ICC during this transition. All airport shuttles for hotels in group 2 first go to the ICC.

Group 2 shuttles will run at the following designated times, departing ICC at: 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, 17:00, 19:00, 21:00

Conference Shuttles

Daily conference shuttles between hotels and ICC

Days:     From Saturday, 16 July to Saturday, 23 July
Times:            Schedule coming soon to this section and check your hotel schedule
Cost: Free to registered conference and pre-conference delegates
Location:    There will be specific pick-up / drop off locations at each hotel. This information will be included alongside the scheduled pick-up times.

Conference shuttles running between the hotels listed above and the ICC are available for all fully registered delegates on presentation of their conference badge to the driver. Vehicles will be clearly marked and drivers distinguishable in AIDS 2016 T-shirts. You do not have to be staying at a hotel to pick up a shuttle at that location.

If you have not collected your conference badge, you will need to show your conference voucher to use these shuttles. 

Additional mini-bus shuttles, for hotels in certain areas, will be available based on a schedule posted at the transportation desk near the ICC Main Entrance.

The first morning shuttle will arrive at the ICC from select hotels at 06:15. The final shuttle will depart the ICC for hotels at 21:00 on all days except Monday 18 July at 22:00.

Return Airport Shuttles

Transport Desk

Tickets will be available for purchase at the transport desk on Thur 21 & Fri 22 July from 08h00-17h00. The cost of the ticket is R80, payable in cash.

Ticket purchase direct from the bus driver will not be possible.

If you have already purchased a return ticket, then please proceed with your journey as below times.

Departure Times

For delegates that have booked transfers to the airport. Please note the following departure times to King Shaka International Airport:

  • 22 July - all departures will be from the Shuttle Pick-up point next to the Global Village – No transfers from the hotels









  • 23 July:
    • departures for only Central Hotels, North & South Beach Hotels & Umhlanga Hotels - will depart direct from hotels at the following times:











    • departures from Morningside, Glenwood, North Coast, South Coast, Pinetown/ Hillcrest, Durban North/Riverside & Pietermaritzburg will depart from the venue Shuttle Pick-up point next to the Global Village at the following times:

*we will be running the usual morning shuttles from the hotels in these areas to the venue, as per the hotel schedule, to arrive in time for the above departure times.

Please note that these are the only departure times from the ICC on the 23rd July.
Do not be late for your departure from your hotel, as per the schedule, otherwise alternative arrangements will need to be made.

Other Transport Options

Park & Ride
AIDS 2016 will be providing a Park & Ride service for all delegates (on presentation of conference badges), as the conference venue itself is not able to accommodate delegates with parking during the Conference. Delegates are encouraged to use the Park & Ride facilities located at Mustering Fields, opposite Kingsmead Swimming Pool. Corner Battery & Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.

Public transport
The Durban People Mover is a shuttle bus service that operates along several routes within the city. It links the beachfront to the city centre and runs the length of the beachfront from uShaka Marine World to Suncoast Casino with designated stops (including the Victoria St Market and City Hall) along the way. 

Official taxi services are available at the airport, ICC and area hotels. Additional mini-bus shuttles will be available based on a schedule posted at the transportation desk at the ICC Main Entrance. We encourage all delegates to take advantage of the tailored shuttle bus services at AIDS 2016.
